Palpate preauricular, posterior auricular, occipital, tonsillar, submandibular, submental, anterior cervical, posterior cervical and supraclavicular nodes. No enlargement, equal bilaterally.

Where to touch

• Preauricular nodes, in front of the ear — Preauricular nodes lie just in front of the tragus.
• Submandibular nodes, under the jawline — Roll your fingers under the mandible, halfway to the chin.
• Submental node, midline under the chin — One midline node, just behind the tip of the chin.
• Anterior cervical nodes, along the front of the neck — They run in front of the sternocleidomastoid, beside the trachea.
• Posterior cervical nodes, along the back edge of the neck — Behind the sternocleidomastoid, in front of the trapezius.
• Supraclavicular nodes, above the clavicle — Hook your finger above the clavicle; ask the patient to shrug.
